Opportunities for Volunteers
1. Tour guide - Primarily
during the month of May, we have nearly 1200 students (elementary and
middle school) who tour the Museum and/or Pioneer Village. Each group
of ten students has a guide to explain the displays and artifacts. A
Training session is held in April.
2. Hosting on Saturdays from
May through September - During these months we are open from 1:00 to
5:00 PM on Saturdays. One staff person works, and it is necessary to
have at least one volunteer to be at the museum during these hours. The
volunteer can help greet people, provide security in the museum and
pioneer village, or work on an office project.
3. Youth Programs - We would
like to provide student day camps in the Village with planned crafts,
games, cooking meals on a wood stove, etc. this effort requires
dedicted volunteers and much planning.
4. Fund-raising - Fund-raisers
are needed to help maintain the operations of the Museum/Pioneer
Village. We have numerous events each year, including Eddie Cochran
Weekend, Autumn in the Village, Membership Drive, and the Christmas
Open House. Volunteers help out before and during each event.
5. Maintenance Projects -
General maintennce of the Museum and Village buildings is a never
ending job - scraping and painting buildings, shutters, benches, and
some of the farm equipment, washing windows, etc. etc.
6. Grounds Care and Flowers -
We can use help planting flowers and maintaining the trees and shrubs.
7. Office and Library Support
- Volunteers can help with folding and labeling the FCHM quarterly
newsletter or other large mailings, or help in the office and library
for a few hours when we are short of staff people.
8. Skills - Teaching the art
of quilting, woodworking, tatting, or any other traditional craft of
100 years ago. These were once crucial to daily living and now are
almost forgotten arts.
9. Collection Care - In order
to maintain a collection the size of that held by the FCHM, volunteers
are needed to assist staff in preservation projects.
10. Sewing Period Costumes -
For some functions it would be nice to have extra shirts, vests,
dresses, aprons, and bonnets, so people could be in a "specific time
period" costume.
