St. Aiden's Catholic Cemetery

St. Aiden's is one of the oldest and most unusual cemeteries in Freeborn County. It is located in the former village of Bath. St. Aiden's Cemetery has been in existence since Barney Banks was buried there in 1858 after he froze to death in a snow storm. The cemeteries inhabitants are primarily Irish immigrants. A church also existed on this site in the days when Bath was a thriving village.

Many of the unique markers in this cemetery are in the shape of tree trunks or branches.

William Shea, whose marker appears on the right, was a newborn in Ireland when the American Colonies took up arms against the British in the Revloutionary War in 1775. He lived to be 107 years old - a great accomplishment for someone today, let alone 100 years ago. He died in 1882.
