Festivities of the Fourth 1887
Freeborn County Standard, Albert Lea Minnesota
Wednesday, 6 July 1887 - Page 5 Column 4
Legend #88 - July 2007

Albert Lea did not formally celebrate this year, but her citizens generally enjoyed themselves fully as well as if there had been an old-fashioned jamboree. Many attended the Bancroft celebration, a score or more went to Wells with Madigan's Band; thirty or more went to Minneapolis and Minnetonka; others visited friends in divers towns, but the great majority, spent the day in picnics in the groves, about the lake, or on their own lawns. A heavy shower of rain at about 5 o'clock in the afternoon drove many jolly parties under shelter, and in some instances, spoiled the arrangements for the grass-spread lunches, but altogether, it was a well-spent day, and most people benefitted by the respite from care and labor.

We had the pleasure of visiting the Bancroft celebration, the most extensive one in the county, being there when it was broken up by the shower. It was then virtually ended, and was in all respects, a splendid success and creditable to all participants. The program was published, was almost completely carried out, and was appreciated by the host of people in attendance. H. R. Fossum admirably read the Declaration of Independence; the Glee Club led by Prof. G. A. Christenson, rendered delightful music as did also Brundin's band; W. E. Todd delivered the regular oration, and it was a truly able and eloquent effort. A basket dinner followed; then music and splendid speech by G. A. Christenson in he Norwegian language which deserved the hearty applause it received; then a speech by Mr. Cooper of Forest City, followed by an earnest thoughtful and patriotic address by T. G. Opsahl of Bath; then the ragmuffins, then the races and amusements until the rain drove the crowd to shelter or to their homes.

In the evening in the city there were many neighborly and social gatherings, and fireworks illuminated the sky in various directions for the entertainment of young and old. No accidents are reported; the flag of freedom yet waves; the eagle of liberty is set free for another year, and the sons and daughters of America are prepared to continue to appreciate and enjoy the blessings of this Yankee Doodle land.
